One tool. Every trade.
The complete installation plan.
KNX group addresses, DALI buses, load calculations, voltage drop, wiring sheets — for lighting, sockets, roller blinds, HVAC, presence sensors, and scenes. Built for the people who actually wire things.
Not a lighting configurator.
A complete installation planning tool.
Most tools only handle one trade. SmartWire Studio was built for the full scope of a modern smart home: KNX wiring, group address management, DALI topology, device load balancing, and customer documentation — all in one project.
If you're an electrician or integrator quoting a 200-circuit KNX house with roller blinds on every window, socket circuits on every floor, presence sensors in every room, and a full lighting topology — this is what you've been missing.
Who uses SmartWire Studio?
The KNX Installer
Electricians & system integrators
You quote a 150-circuit KNX project, win it, then spend three evenings building group address lists in Excel. SmartWire Studio replaces that entirely. Define rooms once — every function gets its group address automatically. Hand your client a PDF that looks like it came from a €5000/day engineering firm.
- All KNX trades in one project
- Auto-generated group addresses per function
- Per-controller wiring sheets, ready to print
- Customer PDF: room-by-room, jargon-free
- Load balancing across all PSU zones
The DIY Builder
ESPHome tinkerers & Shelly power users
You're building your own smart home with ESPHome, Shelly devices, WLED strips, and a Home Assistant instance you've spent more hours tuning than you'd like to admit. You need to know if your 200W power supply can handle all three strips in the living room, and whether the cable to the furthest strip is too thin.
- ESPHome, Shelly, WLED controller support
- Automatic wattage & current calculation
- Voltage drop per strip, per cable run
- PSU load & channel utilization overview
- Free forever — no invite code needed
The Homeowner
Commissioning a smart home build
You've hired an integrator and signed off on a KNX system you don't fully understand yet. Your installer shares read-only access to the project — you can see exactly which switches control which rooms, where the roller blind actuators are, and what each circuit does. No logins, no spreadsheets.
- Room-by-room circuit overview
- All trades: blinds, lights, sockets, HVAC
- Always live — updated by your installer
- No account required to view
Every trade. One project.
SmartWire Studio plans the full scope of a KNX installation — not just the lights on the ceiling.
Lighting
LED circuits, DALI dimmer channels, switching actuators, scene presets. Full channel assignment, voltage drop per strip, cable injection point guidance. KNX group addresses for on/off, dimming, status, and scenes.
Sockets & Outlets
Track every switched socket circuit by room and zone. Assign KNX group addresses for switching and status feedback. Document load distribution across actuator channels.
Roller Blinds & Shading
Manage every blind and shading actuator across the building. KNX group addresses for up/down, stop, position, and slat angle. Track which actuator serves which room, floor, or façade orientation.
HVAC & Climate
Room-by-room thermostat functions: setpoint, actual temperature, operating mode, fan speed. Map every HVAC KNX object to its group address and actuator channel.
Presence & Motion
Document every presence detector, motion sensor, and brightness sensor by zone. Link sensor group addresses to their controlled functions. Track coverage gaps in your floor plan.
Scenes & Central Functions
Plan KNX scenes room by room, plus building-wide central functions: All-Off, Panic, Sleep, Away, and custom presets. Track which functions are preset vs. custom, with full GA assignment.
Security & Access
Document door/window sensors, alarm zones, and access control points. Assign KNX group addresses for alarm status, zone activation, and lock/unlock. Full integration with your central function plan.
DIY Controllers (Free)
Not running KNX? The free tier covers ESPHome nodes, Shelly devices, WLED controllers, and any custom 24V LED controller. Define channel capacities, voltage, and max current — then let the app verify your load.
From project setup to wiring sheet in one session
Set up your building structure
Add floors, zones, and rooms. Every circuit, actuator, and sensor you add later will be anchored to this hierarchy — giving you a clean, navigable project regardless of how many circuits you add.
Add controllers and power supplies
Register your KNX actuators, DALI gateways, or DIY controllers (ESPHome, Shelly). Add power supplies per zone. The app tracks channel count, max current, and utilization live — no more "does this PSU have headroom?" guesswork.
Plan every trade per room
For each room, add all KNX functions: lighting circuits, socket assignments, blind actuators, thermostat objects, presence sensor links, scenes. SmartWire Studio auto-assigns group addresses and flags anything missing a controller channel.
Check safety & load
Before you commit to a cable size, SmartWire Studio tells you the voltage drop on every LED run, whether each PSU is within its safe operating zone, and which channels are overloaded. Fix issues before the install — not during.
Export and hand over
Generate per-trade PDFs (lighting, sockets, shading, HVAC…) and per-controller wiring sheets with channel maps, cable tags, and injection point guidance. Switch to customer view to give your client a clean, readable version of their entire system.
PDF export and wiring sheets require the Professional tier.
Why cable sizing matters more than the PSU
A common mistake: you spec a perfectly sized 24V/200W power supply, run a 5-meter LED strip from it, and the far end of the strip glows noticeably dimmer than the near end. The PSU is fine. The cable is the problem.
Every cable has resistance. Current flowing through it "uses up" some voltage before reaching the load. This is called voltage drop (dU). For LED strips, a drop above 3% causes visible dimming at the far end — and above 5% it becomes a quality issue you can't fix after the wall is closed.
The formula SmartWire Studio uses
L — Cable length one-way (meters)I — Current load (Amperes)ρ — Copper: 0.0178 Ω·mm²/mA — Cable cross-section (mm²)Worked example
4m cable run, 2.5mm², 2A load on a 24V system:
Same current but 10m cable at 0.5mm²:
SmartWire Studio calculates this for every circuit as you type. It also tells you whether single-end, dual-end, or mid-point injection is required based on your strip's maximum rated drop.
Power injection
Feeding from both ends of the strip halves the effective cable length — which reduces voltage drop by ~75%. SmartWire Studio recommends this automatically when your run exceeds safe thresholds.
What is a KNX group address — and why do 200 of them become a management problem?
In a KNX installation, every function — a light dimmer, a blind motor, a thermostat setpoint — communicates via a group address (GA). A medium-size residential project easily has 300–600 group addresses across lighting, sockets, blinds, HVAC, and scenes.
Traditionally, these are managed in ETS or, more commonly, in Excel. Both work — until you rename a room, add a floor, or change actuator models three weeks into the project. Then every address shifts.
SmartWire Studio derives group addresses from your room hierarchy automatically. You define functions per room; the tool generates the addresses. Change the room — the addresses update. Every function always knows where it lives in the building.
How addresses are structured
Addresses follow a three-level hierarchy matching your building: Main Group / Sub Group / Function. For example: Floor 1 / Living Room / Dimming = 1/2/3. SmartWire Studio assigns and tracks these so nothing is ever re-used or orphaned.
